What are Those White Spots I get From Tanning? And How Do I Get Rid of Them?
| There is a common issue with “white spots” appearing on your skin while indoor tanning.. Don’t Panic! Thankfully there is an explanation for this issue and a possible cure! Lets take a closer examination.
Don’t worry your not dying… The white spots can be a result of several different cases but all of which share one thing in common, they don’t allow melanin to be produced in that specific area of the skin, and therefore cannot alter its pigment. In other words you cannot tan in those small areas. |
Tinea versicolor
Most commonly this can be the result of a skin fungus called tinea versicolor and will spread further if not treated. These will generally form on the back, chest, and upper arms, which appear to be flaky or scaly.
Fortunately, there is an easy process to treat this fungus. Go to your local grocery or pharmaceutical store and look for an over-the-counter cream containing ‘ketoconizole’. This can also be found in most dandruff shampoo’s believe it or not.
Apply the cream or shampoo to the spot(s) several times a day for the next two weeks. Soon afterwards the spots should stop spreading and itching. After a full 7 – 14 days of treatment this fungus should have disipated and all that will remain are the white spots of untanned skin that were underneath. Therefore you will be required to continue tanning to fill in the previously unexposed skin.

Know your skin type. Your skin type can determine what is a suitable amount of ’sun time’ is for you.

Read for more information on the safety of tanning.
Step 1 – Obtain your base tan
A base tan is just establishing a light tan to prepare your body for heavier exposure to UV rays. If you were to begin long tanning sessions (indoors or outdoors) without gradually building up exposure time your body will most likely get burned.
Consider hitting your tanning salon for 3 to 6 sessions to get your base tan. With the controlled environment of a tanning bed you can ensure measurable results and gradually build up your base tan safely.
Be conservative. Especially if this is your first time, or you have not tanned for several weeks/months. When going for each tanning sessions keep your time to a minimum to avoid burning. Consult with a tanning salon employee as various tanning beds can vary in strength.
Tan every 48 hours for at least two weeks, while gradually building up your time.

There are tons of myths surrounding ultraviolet rays, sunscreen, indoor tanning, lotions, tanning beds, and the sun in general. Some of them are only partially true while others are just completely off the wall. In order to put some sanity back into the sunshine world I’ve provided an explanation of one of the more popular Myths.. Showering after your tan.
Showering Before/After a Tanning Session Will “Wash Away” My Tan!
Showering before or after tanning will have NO affect on your result. Some people advise you to wait 2 to 4 hours before showering to allow the tan to “Sink in”, which is nonsense. Your tan is not on the surface of your skin which can simply be washed down the drain.

Here is a Quick Science Lesson for You…
When your skin turns to a nice dark tone a process called Melanogenesis has occurred. Simply put; a Melanocyte (a cell located below the skin surface) releases Melanin cells in response to exposure to UV irradiation which will create the darker pigment. So UV lights do not ‘absorb’ into the skin, rather they stimulate cells in the bottom layer of skin located in the epidermis. Fortunately, water cannot rinse off your epidermis. This myth may have begun due to the types of lotions and moisturizers used in the shower.. |
