I have received a few questions regarding the risks associated with different tanning products like bronzers, accelerators, tingle lotions, and tanning pills. As far as side effects associated with applying the lotions there are little to no health risks. However there are some things to keep in mind when using a tanning product in combination with the sun or a tanning bed. Listed below are some of the risks, safe procedures, and quick pointers for these products. As with any tanning product, always keep in mind that your skin may react differently. If your skin develops irritation as result of tanning or a tanning product, please consult with your doctor or dermatologist for more information. Tanning Lotion, Tingle, Accelerator, Bronzer

Tinglers:

This lotion is applied to accelerate the tanning process, while creating a ‘tingling’ sensation wherever applied. The sensation is the result of blood rushing to the surface of your skin, allowing you to tan faster. Tinglers will affect everyone differently, and some people can find the tingle reaction VERY overwhelming. (Read Tanning Lotions Article for More info…)

What You Need to Know:

  • You should always consult with your tanning salon employee for appropriate safety details and product information on tinglers.
  • Tinglers are NOT recommended for beginners, and should only be used once you have obtained a base tan.
  • Read each label carefully, and look for the letter “T” followed by a number (T10, T15, T30, etc..) these will indicate the products strength. Keep in mind that each company has different ideas on how strong their product actually is. So even though two products have a T15 rating, they may still vary in strength.
  • To get a better understanding of how you may react, try applying the tingler to a small section of your body (i.e. forearm, section of leg) before tanning, observe how your skin reacts and then determine if it’s a good product for you.
  • Always apply the lotion from the neck down, NEVER on your face.
  • Tingler lotion will dramatically increase the effectiveness of each tanning session, so consider trimming your total session time to avoid burning.
  • After the session you will find your skin redder than usual, and in some cases you may have white patches, this is normal, and your skin will return to its original state after a few hours.
  • Avoid showering immediately after your tan, as this can reactivate the tingler lotion. It’s best to wait 2 to 6 hours before a shower.
  • The tingling/burning sensation will generally last 1 - 4 hours, if uncomfortable then apply a moisturizer or aloe vera to soothe your skin. Do not wash with water.
  • Tingler lotion will remain on your skin for up to 24 hours, and can easily transfer to others when in contact with people, animals, and especially children who have sensitive skin. Do not attempt to wash off the tingler with water! Instead use a moisturizer or aloe vera to soothe the skin.
  • Limit the use of tinglers, do not use for every single session as it can create excessive drying or peeling of the skin. For best results use once or twice per week.
  • Consult with a tanning salon employee for the appropriate lotion and strength to use.

First lets talk about what’s happening here. Don’t worry your not dying…The white spots can be a result of several different cases but all of which share one thing in common, they don’t allow melanin to be produced in that specific area of the skin, and therefore cannot alter its pigment.  In other words you cannot tan in those small areas.
